INTERVIEW WITH GTN November 2010

Global Thunda Network in association with Oceania Waves Radio in Perth
Brent Duncan chats with Merry ...
Merry: Hi, I would like to introduce you all to Mr. Brent Duncan, one of our GTN artists from Victoria, So G'day..
Merry: At what age did you first become interested in song writing & playing guitar?
Brent: I started writing at age 13. I had guitar lessons then but didn’t really stick to guitar, I was more interested in writing & singing.
Merry: Tell us a bit about your home town in Victoria.....
Brent: I grew up in Traralgon and have lived in the same house for 24 years, since I was 3 so everyone knows everyone, it’s a good town though.
Merry: Who were some of your influences?
Brent: I’m a very easily influenced person, i like truth and purity. I like a lot of well known bands but there isn't really anyone who makes me say i want to be like them. .... I'm happy just being myself.
I have gone through phases of obsession, like for a few months I'll listen to one band and thrash them, then its like they've stored their spot in me... but to name a few bands I've loved, 3 doors down, Pearl Jam, Live, Blessed Union of souls
Merry: In 2008 you release an EP featuring two versions of Rocket Boots which I hear won an award in America, that must've given you a buzz...
Brent: It has been featured on American and Australian Independent Radio stations & I received an honorable mention for “Rocket Boots” at the American Indie Top 10 Aussie unsigned band requests. It also placed number 43 and 47 for 2 of my songs, Rocket Boots Acoustic, and Rocket Boots Band Version. Those placings were 'most voted' songs for that year (2008). This brought attention to almost 70 percent of the listeners coming from places like Texas, Los Angeles and New York. So yeah - pretty happy about that.! So it did very well for a Debut EP, coming from a country town and without any gigs it did really great. But I feel like I am only just starting to get somewhere now.
Merry: I hear there is some sort of cartoon connection to Rocket Boots..
Brent: There is … (Laughs), I have loved Astro Boy since I was a kid and I really wanted to write a song written through the eyes of him, it was one of the many things I wanted to achieve.
Merry: So your a fan of cheesy characters such as Astro boy.. They don't make cartoons like that anymore [laughing} ... But I digress...[deep breath]
What was your personal favourite song off that CD?
Brent: I would say September Sixteen will always hold a special place, I wrote it for my Dad who passed away in 2004.
Merry: I gotta agree with that... beaut song I was definitely drawn to it as well,
Now over to the brand new release debut album ... 'Rusted & Rocked'... Tell us a little bit about what to expect from it..
Brent: 'Rusted & Rocked' is something I have been working at all my life, its the record I finally got to make and has years of emotions and life experiences attached to it, Some very deep and personal. You can expect an improvement, new sounds, old tracks being re-born, and a mixture of genres.
Merry: Where does your inspiration come from when writing? Every track is different how do you stay creative.?
Brent: I am always writing new songs and keeping creative but on this album I really wanted to re-birth a few of the songs so I re-recorded them to give that extra kick and completion. I'm a very easily influenced person, if something shows its heart I'm automatically attracted to it, I like truth and purity. I am inspired by many things, day to day life, heartbreaking experiences I see people go through, anything that interests me and worth writing about. You have to keep music interesting and step out of that comfort zone and take risks once in a while.'
Merry: Absolutely!!
What do you think people are most impressed with in regards to yourself..
Brent: One thing i am definitely proud of is the fact that most people I talk to are always impressed that I write my own songs, sing, compose plus do all the design work for myself, by myself with out ever any help... and that's the way I like it. Most people collaborate in one way or another, but even when I write, I don't make up a tune then put lyrics to it visa versa, ... the whole song comes with melody, lyrics as if I have just pressed play in my head.
Merry: So you would ever consider doing a cover??
Brent:Sure I would consider doing covers, I love artists that do rendition’s of covers and make it their own.
Merry: How would you best sum up "Rusted & Rocked" ?
Brent: Rusted & Rocked is simply a record with all the important experiences I've had in my life, I wanted to create an album of all genres.
Merry: Is there someone you'd really love to play live & why?
Brent: I would love the chance to sing with Hayley Jensen, she’s my favourite female singer and she’s Aussie and she’s been a great friend too. Her voice is angelic.
Merry: Now that would be a ripper show...
If you could meet any person who would that be?
Brent: Well I guess all of my favourite bands, and having a country back ground I’ve always loved Shania Twain, her triumph over tragedy story is inspiring plus she’s a stunner!
Merry: Finally How can fans get a copy of Rusted & Rocked?
Brent: They can keep up to date via my website www.brentduncan.weebly.com and I will keep them posted on where it will be available.
Merry: Thanks Brent for your time & of course for the privilege of being able to play your music on the Global Thunda Network..
This is Merry signing off & wishing you a bonza of a day.. xxx
